Misión de Caridad educates students supported by a comprehensive family empowerment program for displaced people living in extreme poverty in San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora Mexico.

Our mission: to break the cycle of poverty for women and children at the border by educating the next generation.

Our vision: a vibrant, self-reliant community where children are attending school, graduating from college, and, are able to provide a better future for their families.

Our theory of change has developed based on the harsh realities of educating children living in extreme poverty:  It is not enough to build a school.

We have built a bright, clean, safe community center (which translates to “House of Hope”.  We have hired engaging, caring, talented teachers to deliver the curriculum at our school, Instituto Esperanza.  But children in poverty face bigger obstacles to learning: hunger, instability at home, lack of role models, and, often, the need to provide for their families financially.

When families don’t have to choose between meeting basic needs and keeping their kids in school, THEN learning can happen and progress is made.  So when we enroll a student in Instituto Esperanza, we engage the entire family through our empowerment programming.

These Images capture our organizing framework and the corresponding programs that alleviate poverty and allow students to stay in school and thrive
