The Ultimate Guide To Films About Refugees [100+ Movies & Documentaries]

Photo: Children of Men, Universal Pictures (2006)

For thousands of years, displacement and migration have played an essential role in human history. No matter the reason for leaving one’s homeland, the experience of leaving behind everything familiar to journey towards a new, better life is a familiar story. It’s no wonder, then, that so many films have centered around these very themes.

We believe that it's important for everyone to learn about the refugee experience, and films are just one way to do so! By watching someone’s story, we can become more compassionate and aware of what these populations go through. It also helps break stereotypes and prejudice, which can inspire conversations about how we can create a more caring and inclusive world.

We hope this list will be of use to anyone looking to learn more about the refugee experience!

How To Use This List

  • Every film is listed alongside the name of a country and then categorized according to the world region with which it is commonly associated. For example, a film about refugees from Cuba would be listed under the category “The Americas”.

  • The films are categorized by the country of origin of the displaced person/s in the film, not on where the story takes place. For example, the movie Fear (Strah in Bulgarian) is categorized under “The African Continent” and not “Europe'' because the refugee character in the movie is from Mali. Even though the entire story takes place in Bulgaria, Europe, it is the refugee’s country of origin that is used for organization.

  • At the bottom of this page is an additional list of films that are focused on migrants and not refugees. However, they cover similar themes such as the challenge of putting down new roots, widening generation gaps, battling racism and cultural isolation, and ongoing legal tensions.
