Super Saturday Program
The Problem
Over the past few years we have learned that it is virtually impossible for families to break free of the cycle of poverty without additional resources.
To change this paradigm, MdC is focusing on building deeper relationships with children and parents together. MdC is providing families many different opportunities to improve their situations and they are responsible for participating.
Super Saturday was launched in February of 2022 to bring opportunities for families to improve their lives.
These issues can include:
Health challenges
Lack of community
Financial illiteracy
Missing education
No fall-back plan in case of emergency
Enter, Super Saturday. This program is designed to be a fun and learning time for families. To meet them where they are, and provide them with support needed to break free from the vicious cycle of poverty.
By working with families more intentionally, we can develop deeper relationships and better understand their needs. Our goal with this approach is to encourage families to become more holistically engaged and provide them hope for a better future.
Program Overview
While our program changes dynamically as the needs of our community change, there are our pillars of focus:
Health & Wellness Seminars
Community game and enrichment time
Meal time
Monthly grocery distribution (Feed-A-Family)
This time is designed to give women the opportunity to build community with each other, engage with their children in a relaxed and fun way, and learn information and skills that will help improve their health, parenting and emotional well-being parent. Seminar topics are designed to meet the needs of the community and game time it designed to be fun and engaging for all.
In 2021, 0ur Women’s Work Program was launched at a Super Saturday by a MdC community member Aurora who taught embroidery and Aylin (featured on our women’s work program blog) who taught women to make bags.
Women continue to make products on demand that are sold in our MdC store, https://mdcaridad.org/store. All sales help women address their economic poverty.
Our Goals
Our goal is to improve the health and welfare of people through targeted programs and community building.
We call it Super Saturday because it hits on the different types of poverty people face: health, economic, and community.
Our programs target and help address each of these specific areas.
Seminars on health and wellness provide women with the knowledge and skills to change the health patterns of themselves and their families.
Project Classes addresses economic poverty by teaching women to make things that we will buy from them and sell (Women’s Work Program).
Our Game Program addresses community poverty by creating interactive games and opportunities for families to get to know each other and have fun with their children.
Our educational-focused program is a seminar series that focuses on topics like finance, the importance of school, emotional development stages in the lives of their children, and other areas that may arise.
Our Food Program addresses food insecurity by providing healthy groceries we help alleviate the burden of food while families are working on other areas of their lives.
In all of our programs we teach respect by encouraging people to show up on time. We teach empowerment by not giving out handouts. We provide opportunities for people to improve their lives. And, we treat people with dignity in everything we do - Our families matter.
