Feed-A-Family and Our Community

Our teams in Mexico have been working for months to provide fresh groceries and assistance to families. Their work highlighted the needs within the local community, including ways to lift people out of poverty.

We serve rural communities on the outskirts of San Luis Rio Colorado, where many are farmworkers. People are unable to pay the high interest on government-sold houses, so they are abandoned. Vulnerable populations live in these abandoned houses without electricity or running water and typically pass electrical cords from house to house.

Some families live in houses like this one, without a bathroom or a kitchen. A couple lives here, with only a mattress and a small table. They rely on the generosity of others to prepare their food, as they have to use someone else's kitchen to cook.

Because of COVID-19, many families in San Luis Rio Colorado are out of work. Jose hasn’t been able to work in months. His only source of income is $60 a month from the government. Through our “Feed-A-Family” program, he is able to receive fresh produce, meat, eggs, and dry goods.

Through “Feed-A-Family”, our team has met many individuals who constantly live in fear of their future. This woman is Maria, and she is a single mom of two young girls. She was terrified of the government taking away her kids because she is a single mom.

Some areas of the city face violence and theft. Our teams work 10 hours over 2-3 days. However, in some neighborhoods, it is not safe for them to deliver at night, so they only deliver during the day.

Many families are desperate, and some ask for help as our team delivers groceries. This family was not on the list but saw Misión De Caridad delivering fresh groceries and asked for assistance. We keep extra groceries in the van, so we are not forced to turn a family away if they need help.

This community is close-knit and they look out for one another. Some only live in one room but they share resources and help each other. We recognize the need for long-term solutions for refugees and the local communities. So, we continue to support the local community through its Feed-A-Family Program, we also plan to implement sustainable solutions through the building of Casa Esperanza.
